The Box

By: Melanie

This is the box. The bane of my existence. If I had to pick just one reason why I need this challenge, it would be the box.

Make no mistake. It's not as innocent as it looks. I know what you're thinking. One box? She's complaining about one box??

Don't be fooled. This wily character may look like one box, but you would be amazed by the dark magic it is capable of. It has no bottom. Really. It's true. Whenever I go digging through it to finally put everything where it belongs, a new pile of stuff appears on top. I wouldn't believe it myself if I hadn't seen it with my own eyes.

It is the dumping ground for anything that a) doesn't have a home or b) I think I might need to use soon or c) I want to avoid but know that I should deal with or d) happens to be on the kitchen table when I need to clear it off.

Slowly, week by week, I've been whittling away at it as different tasks call me to use some of its contents. The bills are gone. The personal information and tax papers are gone. This week I'm hunting for receipts in its depths. And by the end of the year, it will no longer exist, except as a sad, broken down specimen on the curb to be recycled.

This challenge will be the end of the box. I can't wait.

  1. Did you steal that box from my house? I mean, I think I have a couple of those myself. One is behind a chair right now. Not lying. Embarrassing, really.
